Schmidt; hneilson@mailserver.pppl.gov Subject: Summary of SIT Meeting of 6/3/02 We discussed the critical-path schedule for the next few months. The main goal is to update the modular coil specs in time to place contracts for R&D scheduled to start in early FY-03. Schedule Now through July 12: Configuration studies (see below). July 12 - Update coil geometry. July 12- August 12 - Update CAD model (including "Williamson-ize" the coils). Aug. 12- Issue RFP for modular coil R&D. Nov. 1.- Award modular coil R&D contracts. Configuration studies. 1. Tolerances. Extend modular coil perturbation studies to set tolerance budget for spec. (Eng.) 2. Cooling concept. Look for an alternative cooling scheme that would get rid of the chill plates. Goal is a simpler design. (Eng.) 3. Structural analysis. Extend studies to more load cases, and adjust design to gain margin where needed, lighten the shell where possible. (Eng.) 4. Refine SOL requirements: What plasma-PFC gap is needed, as a function of position (phi, theta) on the plasma surface? (Physics.) 5. Increase available SOL: Examine possibilities to increase plasma-PFC distance in tight spots by moving PFCs away from the plasma. (Eng.) 6. Coil design improvement: Generate coil designs that increase SOL without sacrificing physics physics properties or engineering criteria. Stay on the CDR winding surface. (Physics) 7. Coil healing. Start healing improved coil designs that are now available. (Physics) ACTIONS: 1. Mike contact Mioduszewski to plan Task #4. 2. Mike issue improved coil designs of interest for study and healing. 3. Hutch contact Reiman to assign responsibility for Task 7, ascertain availability of key people (Hudson, Ku) versus time, find out if there are problems with the healing algorithm, make plan. 4. Hutch update physics and management spending plans for the rest of the year; provide budget for engineering. Mike review physics plans. Next SIT meeting: I propose Monday, June 10 at 11:00 a.m. (Wayne to chair.) Thanks to all, Hutch
