Subject: Summary of SIT Meeting of 6/24/02

Summary of SIT Meeting of Monday, June 24, 2002.

Discussion Material: Engineering Issues (Reiersen)

Progress along the critical-path schedule:

Modifying the Coil Design to Increase Plasma-Wall Clearance (Mike):

Two new coil designs have been posted recently. Their aim is to increase plasma-wall clearance and reduce coil currents. NBI access is potentially an issue.

Action: Brad, check with Dave Williamson about NBI access on the new designs.

The PIES group is in the process of healing the new coil designs. The healing effort is going well.

A third case (still lower currents) is under development. It would depart from the CDR winding surface, however, which is a concern.

Modifying the Configuration to Increase Plasma-Wall Clearance (Brad)

Still awaiting delivery of Poincaré points from Mioduszewski.

The internal trim coils and rf launchers need to be updated to the latest configuration. Majeski and Cole are talking.

WBS 1 Planning. What is the schedule?

Tasks have started. Plan for remainder of FY-02 is being reviewed by the responsible engineers. Goal is to complete the planning by next Monday, July 1.

WBS 3 Planning.

This needs to get higher priority in order to support the definition of interfaces important to design of the stellarator core. If necessary, the effort can be broadened.

ACTION: Wayne discuss with Dave Johnson.

WBS 8 Planning.

There is much to do in the remainder of the Fiscal Year. Establishing baselines, implementing project control system, change control, interface control, plans for FY-03.

ACTION: Wayne, Hutch, Bob, Ron

Coil Protection System. What is the Plan?

Requirements will be driven by WBS 1 needs.

Brad needs to know what is reasonable and what sensors are needed.

ACTION: Wayne obtain documentation on NSTX system from Marsala and Schneider.

Magnetic Diagnostics

Transfer of magnetic diagnostics to WBS 1 was reconsidered.

It was decided that that they should be moved back to WBS 3, for the reason that the magnetic diagnostics should be managed like other diagnostics.  Engineering is responsible for ensuring that interfaces (e.g., with the stellarator core) are properly defined and managed. Project physics is responsible for setting requirements; physics has identified Ed Lazarus to define requirements for equilibrium reconstruction. An individual must be identified to be responsible for the design. System requirements and interfaces must be defined in FY03.

Action: Mike discuss with Jim Lyon concerning possible ORNL candidates to lead or support.

Action: Hutch discuss with Dave Johnson concerning possible PPPL candidates to lead or support.

Integrated System Testing

Transfer of Integrated System Testing to Construction was reconsidered.

Another possibility is to view it as a transition to the operations phase. This would argue for having Integrated Systems Testing as a separate WBS, e.g. WBS 9.

ACTION: Wayne to make a recommendation next week.

CDR Recommendations

Wayne is collecting comments on the proposed CDR recommendation responses. Plan is to develop disposition plan sufficient for CD-1, by June 28.

ACTION: Hutch incorporate comments and combine duplicate recommendations.

Meetings

Monthly project meetings are being considered by engineering. It would function as a project-wide integration meeting. It was suggested that it might displace the weekly WBS 1 meeting one week out of the month. Other meetings are the Monday SIT meetings, the Wednesday WBS 1 meetings, and the Thursday physics meetings.

Next SIT Meeting: Monday, July 1, 2002, 11:00 a.m. EDT. Usual arrangements.

Agenda: Critical-path tasks; WBS 1 plans for remainder of FY; action items.

Please bring any corrections to my attention.

Thanks to all,

Hutch
