16 September SIT Meeting Summary

An SIT meeting was held on 16 September 2002.  Initial discussions centered upon the effect of a continuing resolution.  John Schmidt reported that the impact at PPPL might not be too severe for the first quarter of FY03.  Lab labor was covered along with ~$130K per month of M&S.  Ron Strykowsky indicated that we were scheduled to spend at a far lower rate for the first 3 months, so no significant impact was seen.

A more significant impact might be seen at ORNL.  Jim Lyon indicated that his guidance was to spend at the FY02 level with FY03 rates.  This is substantially lower than planned ($120K per month v. $160K per month).  Brad Nelson is away on travel.  Jim Lyon agreed to touch base with Brad upon his return and to craft a revised plan for FY03 to cover a continuing resolution scenario.  It was noted that additional PPPL resources could be made available to Brad if required.

Mike Zarnstorff reported on progress in developing a new coil modular coil set.  Healed coils have been generated already on the old winding surface, but with higher coil currents than for M45.  The geometry of the new FW is needed to get a good assessment of the improvement.  Dave Williamson will provide Art Brooks with a Fourier representation of the latest FW.  Physics will explore startup and  flexibility to confirm the adequacy of the coil design.  This should be completed by October 4. Dave Williamson will provide the latest PF geometry (with PF3.5) to Art Brooks for posting.  The new PF coil set will be used in the confirmatory studies.

Mike Z reported excellent progress in improving the turnaround time for the healing runs with the arrival of new processors at PPPL.  The turnaround time has been reduced dramatically to 1 major iteration per 1.5 hours.  Given that perhaps 200 major iterations are required for healing, the turnaround time can be reduced from months to weeks.  Mike expects that healed coil set on the modified winding surfaces will be available by mid-October.

Ron Strykowsky reported that he is ready to sit down with WBS Managers.  We ned to iterate to get costs back in the box.  A major issue is the prospect of continuing resolution for the next 3+ months and the need to reschedule work in that event.
