Charge 1. Are all required analyses complete and formally checked and adequate to establish that the proposed design is feasible and meets established design criteria?

2. Are the drawings and documentation adequate to support the procurement and/ or manufacturing process, installation, and ready for sign-off?

3. Is the plan for installation of the trim coils compatible with the machine assembly plans?

4. Is the Product Specification (C-SPEC) complete and satisfactory? Are the interfaces adequately defined?

5. Is the Work Planning form current, and have the applicable requirements been satisfied?

6. Have the chits from the PDR been resolved?

7. Are updated cost and schedule estimates available?

Summary of Results

The final design of the NCSX trim coils was reviewed.  Coil drawings were complete (but not yet signed off), and included all aspects of the structural design and assembly of the two coil configurations used to make up the 48 coil set.  Drafts of the system specification (CSPEC) and Statement of work (SOW) were made available at the time of this FDR, but had not yet undergone a general project review.  All drawings and specifications have subsequently been reviewed and approved. A summary of the approved system requirements was presented as well as the results of the completed analysis of the structural design of coils and mountings for both electromagnetic and thermal loads.  Material specifications and tolerances were reviewed. The result of the testing of the proposed welding of coil structures was also presented. The proposed schedule and expected costs were presented and discussed.

This FDR follows a comprehensive review of the preliminary design (held on 3/24/08), and the resolution of the chits from that PDR were reviewed.

There were 7 chits recorded during this final design review, with suggestions concerning the review of specifications, the thermal performance of the coils in LN2, the analysis of the effects of these coils on other systems, welding techniques, winding geometry/techniques, mounting fastener details, and the possible need of a dedicated system Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA).  The review committee concurred with all chits, and agreed that this review was successful pending resolution of the chits.
