Summary of NCSX SIT Meeting of Monday, Feb. 24, 2003

1. Announcements (Hutch)

* Gene Nardella (DOE-OFES) is the new NCSX Program Manager, replacing Warren Marton who has been reassigned to ITER.

* Preparations for this week's Project Control Systems Review, Feb. 27-28, are proceeding well.

2. Project Control Issues (Ron)

* Project will officially start April 1.

* Advanced Conceptual Design tasks will end, Title I design will start, R&D will continue.

* Accounts will be updated to correctly capture costs.

* We need to estimate CE and Opex needs for the rest of the FY at ORNL and PPPL.

* We need to review and adjust spending plans for the rest of the FY, determine how much management reserve remains, and apply most of it.

Ron has the lead on these tasks. Engineering (Wayne) will identify priorities.

3. Critical Technical Issues

* Plan for establishing the baseline VV geometry. (Brad)

-ORNL is generating a smooth VV geometry that satisfies constraints specified by A. Brooks for assembly of the modular coils over the vessel. The new geometry is expected to be issued this week.

-The next step will be to generate a first wall surface. Physics goals are to have 4cm of SOL and at least 1cm envelope for magnetic diagnsotics behind the first wall. Engineering will strive for this.

-The next step will be to generate reference equilibria.

* Smoothing the waviness in the modular coils. (Brad, Mike)

-The first iteration (EO1) removed the waviness and actually improved the physics properties. The second iteration (EO2) was an attempt to increase coil-coil spacing but did not gain much, so a third iteration is in progress.

-Each iteration takes about a day, physics checks another day, and PIES magnetic surface checks about two days. A final coil design by the end of the week is a possibility.

* Cooling configuration (Wayne)

-The copper strips with cooled clamps has been confirmed as the baseline. Analysis by H.M.Fan has confirmed that performance meets requirements. A manufacturing R&D activity is planned to determine the best implementation approach. A SOW for this task is needed. ACTION: Brad.

4. Next SIT Meeting: Monday, Mar. 3.
