Summary of NCSX System Integration Team (SIT) Meeting of Monday,
November 3, 2003
1. FY-04 Work Planning, Authorization, and
Budgets
- Plans and budgets for the year were recently reviewed.
Most WAFs are in good shape. Issues being addressed are:
- Cost growth in Vacuum Vessel design and R&D
oversight. (Wayne)
- Cost growth in Stellarator Mgt. & Integration.
(Ron)
- Cost growth in Project Management. (Hutch)
- Some WAFs are still outstanding and being followed up.
(Ron)
- Some of the above growth items may be attributable to
PDR responses. How much management reserve is needed? (Hutch)
- How much needs to be committed this year to MCWF and VV
production contracts? (Hutch, Ron)
- What work shall we pull forward from FY-05?
(Wayne, Ron)
- Labor overloads (Ron, Brad)
- October status meetings are planned for this Thursday,
Nov. 6.
2. Modular Coil
Winding R&D
- The FY-04 winding development plan is being reviewed by
Engineering and some changes, including a modification of the twisted
racetrack winding form design, are being considered in order to get full value
out of the program. Cost and schedule impacts are currently being
evaluated. (Wayne, Brad, Dave W.)
3.
Preparations for Performance Baseline Review, Nov. 18-20
- Start-up test plan is needed to complete the
documentation of all 13 EIR scope items. Gentile will provide a draft by 11/5.
- The draft PDR disposition plan is in good shape and will
be discussed with DOE at the IPT meeting on 11/4. The impact of the project’s
proposed responses is $1M in TEC and 2 months in first plasma.
- The EIR team has identified 6 tasks whose cost and
schedule they plan to review in details. Preparation meetings with the
affected WBS managers are being held.
- An agenda and dry run schedule for the Lehman review
have been issued. An all-hands meeting will be held this Friday, Nov. 7, and
dry runs will be all next week, Nov. 10-14.

Modular coil analysis
There is a risk that modular coil
deflections will be found to exceed tolerances. Issues needing follow-up to head
off problems:
- Modeling of the structure is proceeding slowly. Will the
course we are on lead to timely answers or do we need a different approach?
- Modeling of thermal deformations is very difficult. Do
we have a realistic plan?
- Do we have an adequate understanding of what
deformations can be tolerated?
This
issue needs continued SIT attention.
