Summary of NCSX System Integration Team (SIT) Meeting
of Monday, July 19, 2004
1. WBS 1 Re-planning
activity and CPI/SPI improvement (Wayne)
Re-planning input for the major
work packages has been received. A top-down schedule is being developed toward
the milestone of starting to wind the first production modular coil in
mid-January. There are three major activities, all of them close to the critical
path:
- Twisted racetrack coil
fabrication, testing, and evaluation.
- Fabrication of the
pre-production prototype winding form for the first coil.
- Design of and fabrication
of components for the winding assembly.
An ECP is being developed to bring
the performance measurement baseline in line with the new plans. In addition the
ECP must address the declining performance indices for the July close.
Actions regarding the re-planning ECP (Bob, Ron):
- Provide budget for the
extended analysis and testing activities related to fracture life.
- Provide budget for the
C-site power supply option design study.
- Check that proposed changes
will keep indices above 0.9.
- Be prepared to present the
draft ECP, or at least the elements of the ECP, to Greg by Friday, July 23.
- Determine what flexibility
exists to transfer FY-04 funds to ORNL, should the plan require it.
(Jim, Brad, Hutch, Ron)
2. Prototype MCWF processing
(Wayne et al.)
We discussed a proposal by Wayne to terminate processing of
the prototype MCWFs once the production proposals are received. It was argued
that continued work on prototypes thereafter would be of little value but high
cost. Brad recommended finishing the poloidal break. He pointed out that
they could be used for assembly practice (e.g., testing the C-C mating) if
completed. Phil stated concerns that the fracture properties testing effort is
going slowly, and neither supplier has submitted complete properties data. We
concluded the following.
- The project’s preferred
course is to direct the suppliers to terminate processing of the prototypes
when they submit their proposals. This would free up significant budget (100’s
of k$) which would help to cover other project cost problems.
- We don’t need them to ship
the prototypes to us. The winning team could use them for further
manufacturing development later, at their option or the project’s.
- We need to get agreement
with DOE and research any procurement issues.
- Action: Phil discuss
with Procurement.
- Action: Hutch discuss
with DOE. Follow-up 7/19 p.m.: the Federal Project Director does not
support stopping work on the MCWF prototypes at this time. We will re-visit
the question when the proposals arrive.
3. Metrology
critical issue (Wayne)
Wayne announced the project’s metrology core team:
Art Brooks will be project’s expert resource, consistent with his
technical assurance responsibilities. Mike Cole will lead design efforts. Steve
Raftopoulos will lead field implementation. All will attend the W7-X
Metrology Workshop in August. They have been invited by the W7-X team to serve
as reviewers.
4. Next SIT Meeting: Monday, July 26 at
11:00 a.m. EDT.
