Summary of NCSX
System Integration Team (SIT) Meeting of Monday, September 27,

1. August Cost Performance
Review
August cost
performance results were reviewed with Rich last week. Follow-up actions
required:
- 1406, winding R&D:
Expedite completion of materials properties tests, e.g., torsion and
fatigue. Meeting planned for Friday, Oct. 1 at 1:00 with Tom Kozub to plan
remaining tests. Action: Brad announce meeting, Hutch contact Tom Kozub for
a heads-up.
- 1403, modular coil design:
complete tests to resolve winding pack shear issue in the next 1-2
weeks. Action: Brad.
- 1407, winding facility:
Facility readiness review in October should close out this job. How to handle
outstanding tasks (3rd winding line, VPI equipment)? Separate job? Action:
Ron follow up with Jim C.
- 1406, winding R&D: Make
twisted racetrack fabrication a separate job? Action: Ron follow up with
Jim C.
- In future planning, keep
jobs smaller and shorter in duration to improve control. Action: Ron.
- Frequent changes to the
performance measurement baseline since CD-2 have masked true performance. We
need a way to measure performance against the “original” (e.g., beginning of
the FY) baseline that we can use to help improve perfromance. Action: Ron
and Hutch
- Job status needs to be
tracked more frequently than monthly to stay on schedule. Wayne’s Monday 10
a.m. Meetings will be used to track critical-path jobs, review cost and
schedule issues, identify actions. One-on-one interactions with job managers
are needed. Action: Wayne, Hutch.
2. Critical
Issues
- 14-1. Modular
coil design cost and schedule risks
- Planning needs to
identify and address cost and schedule issues, e.g. shear capacity issue,
fabrication and installation of parts, Pro/E frustrations. Incorporate
into FY-05 plans. Raise issues with SIT. Action:
Brad.
3. TF coil make vs. buy
decision
- Quality concerns have
prompted consideration of in-house fabrication of TF coils. A peer review is
scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 1:30 to come up with a recommendation.
Issues are cost comparison (Chrzanowski, Kalish) and availability of
staff to meet the project’s schedule
(Ron).
4. Project Control
