Subject: Summary of NCSX SIT Meeting of 4/4/05
Summary of NCSX System Integration
Team (SIT) Meeting of Monday, April 4, 2005
1.
   Re-baselining Status
  - The current status of
re-baselined cost and schedule estimates were reviewed. Project schedule is
stretched out due to slower funding from DOE. Total cost is increased due to
stretchout of project core team, increased G&A/labor rates, and revised
  estimates. Follow-up actions were assigned.

 - Near-term
  schedule:

    - Apr. 15.  Complete
    Lab review of re-baseline.

 - Apr. 18.  Brief OFES
on major cost and schedule changes.

 - Apr. 18.  Start
    posting documentation on web site.

 - Apr. 20.  Dry runs
of Neilson and Strykowsky presentations, 1:00-5:00.

 - Apr. 25.  OFES
    review and approve new baseline.

2.
   Critical-path Final Design Tasks
(Brad)
  - Brad reported that an
efficient method for modeling the cladding and chill plates has been developed
and ORNL expects to begin producing drawings soon.  Status and forecast
FDR dates to be reported by Dave at March job status meeting later this week .

 - Need to re-assess FY05
funding requirements in light of updated MC and VV design estimates done for
the re-baselining. Action: Brad and Ron.

3.  Project Control
(Ron)
  - March job status meeting
will be Friday, April 8, starting at 8:30. Ron to
  arrange.

4.  Next SIT Meeting: April 18 at
11:00.
5.  Other Planning Items
  - Conferences

    - SOFE-05, Sept. 26-30,
    Knoxville, TN

      - Phil Heitzenroeder is
leading in developing a list of candidate papers. He has identified about
19 potential NCSX papers. Although this may be a few too many, in general
paper submission and attendance by engineering team will be encouraged.
Everyone should provide feedback to Phil.

 - Abstract deadline is
April 30.  PPPL internal deadline is April 22 to Rosemarie
      Fuchs-Smith.

Int’l
    Stellarator Workshop, Oct. 3-7, Madrid.

      - Mike Zarnstorff is on
the program committee.  No deadlines have been issued.

 - Anticipate an invited
paper on NCSX.  Engineering topics may be prominently featured
because of high interest in stellarator construction issues. Examples:
component manufacture, dimensional control, modular coil development.

 - Update of NCSX research
directions and plans would be a likely paper.

 - Expect maybe 3 to
attend from PPPL, maybe 3-4 from ORNL.

    - APS-DPP Meeting, Oct.
    24-28, Denver

      - Deadline for review,
tutorial, and invited papers is May
  18.

   - ARIES-CS

    - ARIES-CS Project may
carry a set of configurations rather than down-select to one.

 - An ARIES team meeting to
be held at PPPL in September will include a “town meeting” of the
stellarator community to provide feedback on the ARIES-CS directions:
    assumptions, configurations, plans.

 - Priorities for
configuration studies between now and September meeting should be carefully
set, due to resource limitations. Meeting of Ku, Zarnstorff, Lyon, and
Neilson should be arranged to discuss priorities.  Action:
    Hutch.
