Summary of NCSX System Integration
Team (SIT) Meeting of Monday, August 29, 2005
1.
Management Issues
- Baseline change proposal
was formally approved by DOE. New baseline TEC is $92.4M, CD-4 is July, 2009.
- Housekeeping & Safety
walkthroughs will be conducted in the NCSX manufacturing and test
areas:
- Coil Test area:
Wayne to arrange.
- TFTR Test Cell:
Hutch to arrange
2. Targeted
Schedule Risks
- Job 1403, MC Type C Design
and Drawings. (Brad) Meeting of design and fabrication teams last week
resulted in a meeting of the minds on required drawings and a plan for
producing them by the end of September. Progress since then has been
according to plan. A meeting is being arranged by Chrzanowski to re-visit Lab
requirements for released drawings when some of the fabrication is done via
computer files.
- Modular Coil Winding
readiness. (Wayne) We no longer see any significant risks to being ready
to start winding the modular coils when MCWF#1 comes in. Chrzanowski has taken
over leadership of periodic MC winding readiness meetings.
- Job 1414, Twisted Racetrack
Coil testing. (Wayne) Good progress last week, summarized in separate e-mail
reports from Gettelfinger and Schneider. Progress was halted by failure of a
Hallmar current transducer. Repairs will be performed this week so that power
testing can resume text week. Williams is working the resource issues.
Power testing is expected to be completed week ending Sept. 9, magnetic
testing the following week.
- TRC cooling configuration
is not fully prototypical of modular coils due to short leads.
Definitive cooldown testing may await the production coils fed via
kickless cable. Since the cooldown testing was the subject of a Lehman
review recommendation, we need to develop a convincing story on this topic
with the data available at the time of the Nov. 2-3 Lehman review.
Responsibility: Brad
- Job 1203, VV design.
(Brad) Resources needed to support a Sept. 16 comprehensive FDR of
the VV system have been made available to Goranson, and the work is proceeding
on schedule.
- Safety and operational
questions regarding the use of nanogel insulation have surfaced and need to
be resolved in advance of the Sept. 16 FDR. Issues include dust,
required PPE, and effects of high temperature operation on the material.
Goranson has the lead in arranging a meeting this week with PPPL
safety personnel and other interested parties.
- Job 1301, TF Design.
(Wayne) Comprehensive FDR on Aug. 12 was successful pending
resolution of 9 chits. Job remains open until they are resolved, but no
schedule impacts are expected.
- Job 1810, Field Period
Assembly. (Wayne) Detailed planning has begun, resulting in a
large number of issues being surfaced. Wayne is working with the Job
Manager Mike Viola to ensure that the necessary preparations are completed for
FPA to begin as soon as VVSA sectors start arriving.
- Job 1250, VVSA Fabrication.
Brad raised a concern regarding the project’s review of in-process metrology
data from Major Tool and whether the feedback given can be construed as
acceptance of non-conformances in the finished product. In our efforts to help
the supplier stay on schedule we may be unintentionally relieving them of
responsibility for conformance. At a minimum we need to follow
procedures for processing of NCRs and it is not clear we are doing so.
It was agreed that this is a non-trivial issue but we did not resolve
it. Brad will arrange a follow-up meeting with Goranson, Viola,
Reiersen, and others to try come up with an approach.
- Job 1411, MCWF Fabrication.
Major Tool appears to be staying close to their latest schedule
forecast, calling for delivery of MCWF#1 on Sept. 16. The project is making
extra efforts to minimize any delays in the inspection, test, and document
review activities.
3. Project Control
(Ron)
- Ron outlined the FY-06 work
planning schedule. A call for planning input was sent out August 16. Input is
due Sept. 2. Project management will review work plans prior to
authorization. Anticipated issues include:
- Increase in coil winding
job estimates.
- Increase in MC Type A
& B design job estimates, schedule stretchout, and resource management
at ORNL. Ron will provide a schedule of design deliverable need
dates to ORNL to facilitate their planning.
- August job status meeting
will be Sept. 7 at 8:30-12:00.
4. Next SIT Meeting: Sept.
12.
