Summary of NCSX
System Integration Team (SIT) Meeting of Monday, January 24,
2005
1. Announcements
- An ECP is being planned
which will draw contingency to address variances associated with retired risks
(jobs closed or nearly closed). A CCB will be held this Friday, Jan. 28.
Action: Bob.
- The next Lehman Review is
confirmed for June 29-30, starting at 10:00 on the
29th.
2. Twisted
Racetrack
- Manufacture is going well.
An updated plan has been submitted. Two-shift operation is planned as a
measure to complete the 2Q Joule milestone on schedule.
- Availability of parts on
time to support the schedule. Drawings of the new chill plate design are
needed by Feb. 1. A design review of the new configuration will be held later
this week, and an ECP will be submitted. Wayne is working on
integrating the deliverables and activities that support the twisted racetrack
with the twisted racetrack schedule.
- We urgently need a strategy
and plan for how we are going to control the current center. After a
discussion of the issues and possible sources of help, it was decided to
consider getting Gary Puhl (J.P. Pattern) involved as a first step. A
short discussion was held with Puhl later in the day, followed by a longer
meeting of project staff. The latter resulted in a plan for going forward with
the twisted racetrack. While this is a good start, a long-term strategy is
still needed.
3. Follow-up items from MetalTek and Major
Tool visits, Jan. 18-19
- Vacuum Vessel joint: There
have been discussions and meetings about changing the vacuum vessel spacer and
weld joint design. Although there are issues and risks associated with the
baseline design, they are being worked through analysis and R&D and have
not encountered any showstoppers. There are significant cost and schedule
risks in the ongoing vacuum vessel Title II and III design activities, which
would be exacerbated by taking on the task of analyzing an alternative design.
For these reasons, it was decided that the project would continue to focus
exclusively on the baseline design and not pursue alternatives. It was
agreed that this decision would be reviewed in about a month.
- Fracture test samples. The
project and Major Tool have agreed on a plan for cutting out the required
samples from the prototype. A cost proposal has been
requested.
4. Schedule for Upcoming Design
Reviews
- WBS 12. FDR is
scheduled for early March but this is optimistic. The issue is designer
staffing. A more realistic date will be proposed. Action: Brad.
- WBS 13. TF PDR is
scheduled for this week, but a ~1-week delay is currently forecast. Action:
Wayne.
- WBS 14. Type C
modular coil FDRs are scheduled for 2/18 and 3/18. The first will address the
Station 1 components such as studs and cladding.
- Updates to the schedule are
requested this week so it can be incorporated into the January status
barcharts. Action: Wayne, Brad provide input to
Ron.
