Subject: Summary of NCSX SIT Meeting of
6/20/05
Summary of NCSX
System Integration Team (SIT) Meeting of Monday, June 20,
2005
1. Critical-Path Schedule
Risks
- Slip in the forecast
delivery of MCWF#1 to July 30 (optimistically) means that we will miss the 4Q
Joule milestone to complete winding of the first modular coil by Sept. 30.
There is a significant risk we will miss the Level II milestone to deliver the
first MCWF in July. Our priorities, under the circumstances,
are:
- Safety and quality.
We will be operating in catch-up mode, with intensified schedule
pressure. We will increase our vigilance to ensure that, even with
those pressures, safety remains the first priority, quality second, then
schedule and cost. Action: follow up with job managers and crews as
appropriate.
- Continue working closely
with EIO to arrest the schedule slippage. In particular, it is important to
support their final inspection and testing activities at Major Tool in the
critical 12-day period just before the part is shipped. Responsibility:
Phil.
- Continue with
preparations to wind MCWF#1 so that no time is wasted when it finally does
arrive. The risk that was identified was the availability of needed
parts being jeopardized by lack of drawings. Responsibility: Wayne
- Keep the project’s
overall schedule in focus. MCWF#2 will arrive not long after MCWF#1.
Transition now from an R&D mode into production mode. Use the time
while we are waiting for MCWF#1 to better prepare ourselves for production.
Key needs are parts, facilities, and staff training. Many of the parts
will be obtained via outside procurements. For some reason, those
require drawings not necessarily needed for in-house fabrication.
Again, the drawings bottleneck is a risk. Responsibility: Wayne.
- The 3Q Joule milestone
(Type C Modular Coil FDR, June 30) and the Start TF fabrication Level
II Milestone (July in the approved baseline) need to be met.
Responsibility: Wayne.
- Re-schedule project work
to minimize the impact of MCWF delays and to support communication with Lab
management and DOE. Responsibility: Ron
- Reassign staff that were
planned for winding coils to other in-scope tasks, to maintain overall
project performance. Wayne. If we do not have enough work, the
Lab will work with us to temporarily assign staff elsewhere. Mike
W.
2. Other Cost and Schedule
Risks (Phil)
- VV Heating and Cooling
procurement. Risk: this is a complicated job with no identified sources
at this time. Need to expedite delivery of a procurement package so they can
get it out on the street for a solicitation. There may need to be some
iteration on the spec with vendors. The spec and SOW need to be reviewed
and signed off. Requirements must be carefully prioritized to keep costs
down. Non-essential requirements must be expunged. Responsibility:
Wayne.
- Twisted Racetrack testing.
Commission CTF this week using planar racetrack. Perform magnetic
testing on the TRC next week. Cool-down and power testing on the TRC the
following week. Responsibility:
Wayne.
