Summary of NCSX
System Integration Team (SIT) Meeting of Tuesday, May 31,
2005
1. Safety
Items
- Coil Test Facility ACC
Review of 5/26/05.
- No show-stoppers found.
OK to proceed with Integrated System Test Program (ISTP)
- ACC required a review of
procedures D-NCSX-OP-G-159 and –163 prior to operation. Charlie
Gentile was assigned to perform the review and report to the ACC. Our coil
test plan is written as an appendix to the ISTP. We need to clarify where
the line is drawn beyond which ACC sign-off is no longer required.
Williams advises that the ACC typically signs-off on start-up
operations but not repeated operations. Action: Wayne/Gettelfinger
resolve.
- Work permits: ACC
questioned whether a work permit needs to be issued daily. Williams advises
that there may need to be one in the system, but not issued daily. We should
consult the shift supervisor. Action: Wayne/Gettelfinger.
- Ray Camp is the new ACC
chair, replacing Dori Barnes who retired.
- Coil Manufacturing
operations in the TFTR test cell: Tom Meighan is responsible during Jim
Chrzanowski’s upcoming vacation.
2. MCWF
Manufacturing Schedule (Phil)
- The MCWF spec and QA
procedures are being revised based on recent discussions with the EIO team.
The purpose of the revisions is to clarify requirements that had been subject
to misinterpretation and to eliminate requirements that have become
unnecessary. QA issues are being tracked via weekly QA notes. A meeting is
planned for Thursday, June 2 at 3:00 to come to closure on the spec changes so
that a revised spec can be issued next week. Responsibility: Phil.
- The May monthly report from
EIO, due this week, will include an updated forecast for MCWF in-process
milestones (pour dates, transfer to machine shop) and deliveries to PPPL (at
least the first 6). Based on the EIO Weekly Report of May 27, we expect
the MCWF#1 delivery to slip to early July. For planning purposes, we assume
MCWF#1 will arrive at PPPL on July 8.
- EIO has invited PPPL to
participate in the final inspection of the MCWF#1 at Major Tool if we wish.
We agree that this would be beneficial, provided it does not interfere
with the supplier’s activities nor relieve them of responsibility for
compliance with contract requirements. Action: Phil coordinate with
Raftopoulos and EIO.
3. Modular Coil Winding
Preparations (Wayne)
- Final Design: It is
forecast that the 3Q Joule milestone will be satisfied with a comprehensive
Type C modular coil FDR scheduled for June 29.
- The June 29 review will
establish that there are no holes in the design or the design basis.
- Intermediate FDRs are
being conducted prior to June 29 in order to expedite the release of
fabrication data (drawings, DXF files, etc.) that are needed to support the
fabrication schedule.
- Not all assembly drawings
will be completed by June 29. Assembly drawings will be prioritized based on
need. (Brad)
- Parts procurement: the
starting lead blocks are critical. An FDR is scheduled for this Friday, June
3. (Brad) The material (G-11) has been ordered and is due in late June.
Larry is working on lining up a vendor to perform the
machining.
4. Vacuum Vessel design and
procurements
- Heating & cooling tubes
and supports: FDR was held last month, but chits have not been resolved
and drawings have not been promoted or released for fabrication. Hence,
procurement has not been initiated. Action: Brad follow up with Goranson.
- NBI port modification to
accommodate vacuum pumping. The project has adopted as a baseline to use
one of the NBI ports for pumping and provide a simple duct to connect to
the pumping system at its permanent location. The details will be presented at
the VV comprehensive FDR planned for July. Some issues:
- The pump duct is
currently planned to be inconel. The rationale will be presented at the FDR.
- What is the procurement
plan for the port modification and duct fabrication? While there are
drawbacks to adding it to the existing Major Tool VVSA subcontract scope,
that path is not ruled out if there are offsetting advantages. The
procurement plan and its rationale will be presented at the FDR.
- Responsibility for
these items:
Brad/Goranson
5. New
work
- WBS 82: Dimensional control
of the MC winding pack: We do not yet have a way to maintain dimensional
control after the winding is complete, once we start installing the ground
wrap, chill plates, and VPI mold. It was decided that some bench-testing
using the straight tee or other available articles is needed to develop a
procedure. Raftopoulos was assigned to develop a plan, which is expected to be
submitted this week. Technician support for this work has been identified. The
work will be funded and authorized under Dimensional Control in WBS 82.
Action: Ron/Hutch provide budget.
- WBS 18: Modular coil
assembly alternatives study. Low-cost alternatives to the baseline
modular coil assembly fixture, for example using hoisting and rigging
equipment and some sort of guide track, are being explored. Some R&D tests
will be conducted in June, expected to cost about $70k. The work will be
funded out of existing WBS 18 budget. This is an additional cost risk to the
WBS 18 budget which will hopefully pay off in the form of a cheaper plan. A
decision on path forward for MC assembly will be made by the end of June.
Action: Ron/Hutch help identify budget.
6. Machine
platform (Larry)
- Staff is available to start
assembling and installing the platform in the NCSX test cell. The budget and
scope were reduced last year. Before work starts we need to review the design
to be sure it makes sense and fits the budget. Action: Larry follow
up with Perry.
7. Next SIT Meeting: June 20.
