NCSX Weekly Update of
11/30/05
1. Modular Coil fabrication
(PPPL)
C-1 Coil
- The ground insulation and lacing strips were installed.
The winding clamp side bars have been installed for both sides A and B.
These control the final dimensions of the winding pack and are positioned in
locations computed for each clamp based on the measurements for that winding
form.
- The lower
leads for side A have been set into position, and the winding of conductor has
started. It is anticipated that both sides A
and B will be wound before the year-end holidays.
- The winding
teams are working 2 shifts per day, and worked several shifts over
Thanksgiving weekend to improve the
schedule.
2. MCWF procurement (Energy Industries of
Ohio)
Machining operations (Major Tool and
Machine):
- The C-2 winding form
completed 5-axis machining operations. It is now on the coordinate
measuring machine undergoing final dimensional inspections. The
project’s expectation is that it will ship around Dec.
10.
- The C-3 casting continues
making good progress through 3-axis machining operations. The poloidal break
has been machined.
- The C-4 is in rough
machining on the Lucas machine. The first side was finished last week
and they have started on the second side.
- The C-5 was released for
shipment from MetalTek last week after reviews of foundry documentation were
completed, and arrived at Major Tool on Monday
11/28.
- The A-1 casting is at Major
Tool.
Foundry operations (MetalTek International):
- The A-2 is undergoing weld
upgrades.
- The A-3 completed its
initial radiographic testing and is back at the foundry. Inspection results
are still being evaluated.
- The B-1 casting was heat
treated and is in grinding operations. A dimensional scan by 3D ScanCo
is scheduled for Dec. 5.
- The C mold has been
assembled and the C-6 casting is expected to pour
tonight.
3. VVSA procurement (Major Tool and
Machine)
- Welding of ports into the
first 120-degree segment continues. All of the large, custom-shaped ports are
welded in and smaller, circular ports are in the process of being welded
in.
- The second 120-degree
segment is on the milling machine, where the port holes are being
cut.
- Fabrication of the fifth
60-degree half-segment continues.
- Fabrication of the large
ports for segments 2 and 3 continues.
- Fabrication of the first
spacer is almost complete.
