NCSX Weekly Update of 04/05/06
1. Modular Coil fabrication
(PPPL)
C-2 Coil
- The ground
insulation wrap has been closed. Chill plates are being installed.
- We forecast completing C2
by 5/8/06, versus 5/4/06 in the project schedule. We are working weekend
shifts in order to reduce schedule risks.
C-3
Coil
- Cladding has
been being installed. Side clamps have been set. Ground wrap installation has
started.
- We forecast completing C3
by 6/18/06, versus 6/23/06 in the project schedule. We are working weekend
shifts in order to reduce schedule risks.
C-4
Coil
- Completed
touch-up grinding on MCWF, moved it to winding facility, installed in winding
ring, and placed in the WF prep station (Station 1b).
- We forecast completing C4
by 7/5/06, versus 7/24/06 in the project
schedule.
2. MCWF procurement (Energy Industries of
Ohio)
MCWF summary status:
16 poured to
date
4 in foundry operations
8 in machining operations
4
delivered.
Machining operations (Major Tool and
Machine):
C-5
- The C-5 is the fourth of
five machining steps on the 5-axis U5 and proceeding well. We forecast
delivery on or before the project’s scheduled delivery date of May
4.
A-1
- The A-1 is progressing well
on the 3-axis Mitsu-40. One side was completed and they are now machining the
second side.
- Some optimization of
machine programs has been necessary, and consequently the first side took
longer than expected, but no major schedule delays have been reported.
- The project’s scheduled
delivery date is June 8.
A-2
- The A-2 has completed
roughing and is ready to go on the Mitsu-40. The project’s scheduled delivery
date is July 13.
A-3 and A-4
- The A-3 and A-4 are
alternating in roughing operations on the Lucas
40T.
B-1, A-5, and C-6
- The A-5 arrived at MTM
after completing foundry operations at MetalTek.
- The B-1 and C-6 are also at
MTM, awaiting machining.
Foundry operations (MetalTek International):
A-6
- The A-6 completed weld
repairs and was shipped to MQS. The plan was to X-ray it over last
weekend.
B-2
- The B2 has returned from
MQS and was found to need only a few major weld repairs. Excavation work is in
progress.
B-3
- The B-3 completed grinding
and was scheduled to ship to MQS on Monday.
B-4
- The B-4 was poured on 3/9,
the 16th casting. It is in the cleanup and initial heat treat
process.
Pattern Fabrication (C.A. Lawton Co.)
- All pattern fabrication
work is complete and EIO has closed their contract with Lawton.
- The Type C and A patterns
will be shipped to PPPL where they will be stored until the last MCWF of each
type is accepted.
3. VVSA procurement (Major Tool and
Machine)
- VVSA #1: The project
completed its evaluation of the out-of-tolerance conditions and provided
direction to Major Tool. The shell geometry is acceptable as it. The
spacer and its flange are in tolerance. The sector flange requires corrective
action to close a radial gap that exists between the seal I.D. and the flange
O.D. The sector flange will need to be ground on its I.D., either by MTM or
after final welding at PPPL, to correct an unacceptable encroachment on the
interior space. The required corrective measures are believed to be relatively
minor, i.e. will not require re-welding of the flange or re-contouring of the
shell.
- The port ends and stubs
are being weld-prepped by MTM, as required for final port installation
during field period assembly at PPPL. To do this, the ports are temporarily
tack-welded onto the vessel to hold them in the right orientation. This step
is taking longer than expected.
- VVSA #2: The #2 shell was
scanned and the dimensional data evaluated by PPPL. It is out of tolerance in
some areas but is much better than #1. The flange is being fit up. PPPL’s Mike
Viola will visit Major Tool on Thursday and Friday to participate in the
fit-check and installation of the flange.
- VVSA #3: On the DSI having
port holes machined. The #3 shell was scanned and the dimensional data
evaluated by PPPL. It is in tolerance.
- Resolution of the
non-conformance issues has delayed the delivery schedule. With the required
corrective measures now established, MTM can update their schedule for
completing the VVSA order.
