NCSX Weekly Update of 04/14/06
1. Modular Coil fabrication
(PPPL)
C-2 Coil
- The return
leads [8] have been brazed, and the chill plates cooling tubes are nearly
installed
- We forecast completing C2
by 5/10/06, versus 5/4/06 in the project schedule. We are working weekend
shifts in order to reduce schedule risks.
C-3
Coil
- Ground wrap and lacing have
been installed, starter leads on side A have been brazed and positioned
- Winding of side A is in
progress
- We forecast completing C3
by 6/16/06, versus 6/23/06 in the project schedule. We are working weekend
shifts in order to reduce schedule risks.
C-4
Coil
- All of the winding clamp
studs, monuments, and mounting nuts have been welded in place.
- We forecast completing C4
by 7/12/06, versus 7/24/06 in the project
schedule.
2. MCWF procurement (Energy Industries of
Ohio)
MCWF summary status:
17 poured to
date
5 in foundry operations
8 in machining operations
4
delivered.
Machining operations (Major Tool and
Machine):
C-5
- The C-5 has completed
machining operations and moved to inspection and test. Dimensional inspection
will be done next week. We forecast delivery on or before the project’s
scheduled delivery date of May 4.
A-1
- The A-1 is progressing well
through machining of the second side on the 3-axis Mitsu-40.
- Some optimization of
machine programs has been necessary, resulting in a week’s delay.
- The project’s scheduled
delivery date is June 8. EIO will update their forecast for A-1 in the next
week.
A-2
- The A-2 has completed
roughing and is ready to go on the Mitsu-40. The project’s scheduled delivery
date is July 13.
A-3 and A-4
- The A-3 and A-4 are
alternating in roughing operations on the Lucas 40T, as well as cutting
poloidal breaks and windows.
B-1, A-5, and C-6
- The B-1, A-5, and C-6 are
at MTM, awaiting machining.
Foundry operations (MetalTek International):
A-6
- The A-6 passed final X-ray
inspection at MQS and underwent the final dimensional scan. Stress relief,
liquid penetrant, magnetic permeability, and final visual inspection are all
that remain.
B-2
- The B2 is being
fast-tracked to move it ahead in the queue to support the project need for a
field period set at the earliest possible date.
- The B-2 passed final X-ray
and was returned to MetalTek for final
processing.
B-3
- The B-3 is at MQS for
initial X-ray.
B-4
- The B-4 completed clean-up
operations and is in grinding. Soon to ship to
MQS.
B-5
- The B-5 poured on April
13.
3. VVSA procurement (Major Tool and
Machine)
- VVSA #1: The ports continue
to be temporarily re-attached. This is done to support weld-prepping of the
port ends and stubs, as required for final port installation during field
period assembly at PPPL.
- VVSA #2: All ports and
bosses have been welded to the shell. The flange was fit up, and dimensional
data passed to PPPL for review before final welding. PPPL has dispositioned
the NCRs, which will authorize MTM to proceed.
- VVSA #3: Machining of port
holes on the DSI has been completed.
- A letter was sent to MTM,
requesting an updated schedule now that the path forward regarding the
dimensional issues has been determined.
