NCSX Weekly Update of 04/14/06
1. Modular Coil fabrication
(PPPL)
C-2 Coil
- The chill
plate cooling tubes have been installed and brazed. VPI preparations
have begun.
- We forecast completing C2
by 5/10/06, versus 5/4/06 in the project schedule. We are working weekend
shifts in order to reduce schedule risks.
C-3
Coil
- Winding of side A was
completed. Winding of Side B has begun.
- We forecast completing C3
by 6/16/06, versus 6/23/06 in the project schedule. We are working weekend
shifts in order to reduce schedule risks.
C-4
Coil
- The baseline dimensional
scan of the winding form is in progress.
- We forecast completing C4
by 7/12/06, versus 7/24/06 in the project
schedule.
2. MCWF procurement (Energy Industries of
Ohio)
MCWF summary status:

Machining operations (Major Tool and
Machine):
C-5
- The C-5 is in final
inspection. Wayne Reiersen and Frank Malinowski are at Major Tool overseeing
the operations. We forecast delivery next week, well before the project’s
scheduled delivery date of May 4.
A-1
- The A-1 is progressing
without major problems through 3-axis Mitsu-40 operations.
- Some learning-related
delays have been experienced, but it is expected to be through 3-axis
operations by this weekend.
- The project’s scheduled
delivery date is June 8.
A-2 and A-3
- The A-2 and A-3 have
completed roughing operations and are ready to go on the Mitsu-40.
- The project’s scheduled
delivery dates are July 13 for A-2 and August 16 for
A-3.
A-4
- The A-4 is nearly finished
with roughing operations on the Lucas 40T, as well as cutting poloidal breaks
and windows.
B-1, A-5, and C-6
- The B-1, A-5, and C-6 are
at MTM, awaiting machining.
Foundry operations (MetalTek International):
A-6
- The A-6 completed
inspections and is ready to ship as soon as outstanding NCRs are
cleared.
B-2
- The B-2 is in final
processing and is expected to ship in the next few
days.
B-3
- The B-3 completed initial
X-ray at MQS and was returned to MetalTek.
B-4
- The B-4 was shipped to MQS
for initial X-ray.
B-5
- Processing of the B-5 is
under way.
3. VVSA procurement (Major Tool and
Machine)
- VVSA #1: The ports continue
to be temporarily re-attached for port alignment, weld-prepping, and
installation of the backing ring and leak-check tube. Re-work of the end
flanges will be done after the #2 end flanges are
welded.
- VVSA #2: All ports and
bosses have been welded to the shell. Laser scanning and flange welding
operations are in progress.
- VVSA #3: Machining of port
holes on the DSI has been completed.
- An updated schedule was
received from Major Tool, forecasting delivery of the 3 segments on 5/23,
7/25/, and 8/15. In a follow-up teleconference, Major Tool stated that
they foresaw no further technical issues, and are staffing the VVSA operation
with welders, laser operators, and 2 team leaders to support completion of the
order. They will be working two 9-hour shifts, 6 days a
week.
