NCSX Weekly Update of 01/11/06
1. Modular Coil fabrication
(PPPL)
C-1 Coil
- The detailed dimensional
scan of the winding pack was completed. The data revealed some problems,
which took some time to investigate. The cause was was traced to errors in
side bar position. The corrections are relatively straightforward and are in
progress.
- We expect to complete the
C1 coil by 3/7/06, or 22 days ahead of schedule for the Level II milestone
scheduled for March.
C-2 Coil
- All winding clamp support
studs were installed, and C2 is being moved to the winding station.
- We expect to complete the
C2 coil by 4/17/06.
2. MCWF procurement (Energy Industries of
Ohio)
MCWF summary status:
11 poured to
date
4 in foundry operations
5 in machining operations
2
delivered.
Machining operations (Major Tool and
Machine):
- PPPL, ORNL, and contractor
staff met at Major Tool Jan. 4-6 to discuss possible design, tolerance and
specification changes which could help to reduce the current lead time for
machining the winding forms. As a result, a number of technical changes
are being implemented. They are expected to modestly reduce machining
time.
C-3
- The C-3 is in 5-axis
operations on the U5. We expect it around the end of
February.
C-4
- The C-4 is in 3-axis
operations on the Mitsu-40. Major Tool forecasts delivery of C-4 on 3/10/06.
Our assessment is that it will be in April.
C-5
- The C-5 is in the queue for
the Mitsu-40.
A-1
- Should be in rough
machining on the Lucas-T.
A-2
- The A-2 is in the queue for
the Lucas T
Foundry operations (MetalTek International):
A-3
- Weld repairs of LPI
rejections are in progress. Thereafter it will be shipped to MQS for
radiographic testing.
B-1
- The B-1 is at MQS
undergoing radiographic inspection.
C-6
- The C-6 returned from MQS
after initial radiographic inspection, and processing at MetalTek
resumed.
A-4 Casting
- The A-4 casting
completed heat treat and the gates and risers are being
removed.
A-5 Casting
- Setup of the A pattern is
in progress in preparation for pouring the A-5 in
mid-January.
3. VVSA procurement (Major Tool and
Machine)
- The end flanges were
welded, completing the fabrication of the first 120-deg
segment.
- The second 120-degree
segment is on the DSI milling machine, where cutting of port openings is
nearly complete.
- Fabrication of the fifth
and sixth 60-degree half-segments continues.
- Fabrication of the first
spacer is completed and the second is in
progress.
- Major Tool’s delivery for
the 3 VVSA segments: 3/27/06, 5/15/06, and 6/16/06. The final sector
delivery forecast date is 2.5 months ahead of schedule for the Level II
milestone scheduled for September.
