NCSX Weekly Update of 01/18/06
1. Modular Coil fabrication
(PPPL)
C-1 Coil
- Adjustments to the winding
pack to correct the current center position were completed. Closing of the
lacing strips and ground wrap is now starting.
C-2
Coil
- The C2 winding form was
moved to the winding station. Measurements of the winding surface are in
progress.
2. MCWF procurement (Energy Industries of
Ohio)
MCWF summary status:
12 poured to
date
7 in foundry operations, including 2 sent back from machine shop for
re-work
3 in machining operations
2
delivered.
- EIO was requested to
submit, by January 24, an updated plan for completing the remaining MCWF on a
schedule that supports the NCSX project baseline. EIO is working with its
sub-contractors MetalTek and Major Tool to produce the
plan.
Machining operations (Major Tool and
Machine):
C-3
- The C-3 is in the second of
five 5-axis operations on the U5. We expect delivery around the end of
February.
C-4
- The C-4 is in 3-axis
operations on the Mitsu-40, reportedly progressing very well. We expect
delivery of C-4 in April.
C-5
- The C-5 is in the queue for
the Mitsu-40.
Foundry operations (MetalTek International):
A-1 and A-2
- The A-1 and A-2 were
returned to the foundry for removal of excess material in certain locations.
It was determined that these re-work operations could be performed more
quickly at MetalTek. The project views this as a positive action, given
the backlog of NCSX castings at Major Tool, which will benefit the schedule.
The re-work operations are in progress.
A-3
- Weld repairs of LPI
rejections were completed. It was scheduled for scanning on 1/13 prior to
being shipped to MQS for final x-ray.
B-1
- The B-1 was x-rayed at MQS
and returned to MetalTek. Initial reports on the x-ray data are
favorable.
C-6
- The C-6 is in weld repair
operations. The casting quality is exceptionally good, based on the
radiographic results.
A-4
- The A-4 casting is in
grinding operations.
A-5
- The A-5 casting was poured,
the twelfth of eighteen.
3. VVSA procurement (Major Tool and
Machine)
- The first 120-degree
segment is being polished and cleaned.
- The neutral beam ports are
being welded onto the second 120-degree
segment.
- Fabrication of the fifth
and sixth 60-degree half-segments is nearing
completion.
- Fabrication of the first
spacer is completed and the second is in
progress.
- Major Tool’s delivery for
the 3 VVSA segments: 3/27/06, 5/15/06, and 6/16/06. The final sector
delivery forecast date is 3.5 months ahead of schedule for the Level II
milestone scheduled for September.
