NCSX Weekly Update of 01/25/06
1. Modular Coil fabrication
(PPPL)
C-1 Coil
- Closing of the lacing
strips is complete. Closing of the ground wrap is now starting.
- We expect to complete the
C1 coil by 3/13/06, or 16 days ahead of schedule for the Level II milestone
scheduled for March.
C-2 Coil
- The cladding is being
installed on the C2 winding form.
- We expect to complete the
C2 coil by 4/20/06, which is 3 days behind our Level III schedule target in
the performance-measurement baseline. The C2 coil is well off the critical
path.
2. MCWF procurement (Energy Industries of
Ohio)
MCWF summary status:
12 poured to
date
5 in foundry operations
5 in machining operations
2
delivered.
- EIO was requested to submit
an updated plan for completing the remaining MCWF on a schedule that supports
the NCSX project baseline. EIO has submitted a plan from MetalTek for
completing foundry operations, and is working with Major Tool to produce
the machine shop plan. A review of the plan is scheduled for Jan. 31 at
PPPL.
Machining operations (Major Tool and
Machine):
C-3
- The C-3 casting was flipped
and is in the third of five 5-axis operations on the U5. We expect delivery
around the end of February.
C-4
- The C-4 is in 3-axis
operations on the Mitsu-40, reportedly progressing very well. We expect
delivery of C-4 in April.
C-5
- The C-5 was set up on the
Mitsu-40, so it can be machined while the C-4 is changing
setups.
A-1 and A-2
- The A-1 and A-2 completed
minor re-work at the foundry, passed LPI inspection, and were due to be
shipped back to Major Tool last weekend. The A-1 is next in line for
machining.
Foundry operations (MetalTek International):
A-3
- Weld repairs were
completed. A final X-ray was performed in-house this week. It is ready for a
final dimensional scan.
B-1
- The B-1 was returned to
MetalTek after radiographic testing at MQS. It is ready for
welding.
C-6
- The C-6 completed grinding
and weld repair operations, and was moved to the in-house X-ray
center.
A-4
- The A-4 casting
completed grinding operations and was shipped to MQS for initial radiographic
testing.
A-5
- The A-5 casting was shaken
out and the gates and risers removed. Visual examination indicates good
quality.
A-6
- The mold for the A-6
casting is being assembled.
3. VVSA procurement (Major Tool and
Machine)
- Mike Viola and Jim Kukon of
PPPL are at Major Tool this week participating in vacuum testing of the first
120-degree segment. They report good progress in equipment checkout and expect
to begin pumpdown soon.
- The large ports are being
welded onto the second 120-degree segment.
- Major Tool’s delivery for
the 3 VVSA segments: 3/27/06, 5/15/06, and 6/16/06. The final sector
delivery forecast date is 3.5 months ahead of schedule for the Level II
milestone scheduled for September.
