NCSX Weekly Update of 07/12/06
1. Modular Coil fabrication
(PPPL)
MC Fabrication summary status:
4 in winding form
prep and winding operations
3 completed through VPI prep (2 completed
through VPI)
C-1 Coil
- A G-11 panel was removed
from the lead area to expose the suspected location of the ground insulation
fault that was discovered during testing. The investigation confirmed
that, as suspected, the fault was due to compression of the ground insulation
by one of the chill plates. Eliminating or trimming a single chill plate in
this area does not impact performance. The problem was thus easily corrected,
after which the coil successfully passed a meggar
test.
C-2 Coil
C-3 Coil
- Installed in autoclave.
Connection of epoxy feed and pumping hoses is in progress, in
preparation for VPI next week.
C-4 Coil
- Chill plate installation
was completed. Cooling tube installation is in progress.
- VPI prep completion
milestone is July 20. Currently 8 working days behind
schedule.
C-5 Coil
- Inner ground wrap has been
installed. Positioning of lacing strips is in progress.
- VPI prep completion
milestone is August 16. Currently 8 working days behind
schedule.
A-1 Coil
- Stud installation in
progress.
- VPI prep completion
milestone is October 2. Currently 3 working days behind
schedule.
A-2 Coil
- In the queue for winding
operations.
- VPI prep completion
milestone is November 10. Currently on
schedule.
2. MCWF procurement (Energy Industries of
Ohio)
MCWF summary status:
All 18 castings
have completed foundry operations
4 in active machining operations
7 in
the machining queue
7 shipped to PPPL
Machining operations (Major Tool
and Machine):
A-3
- The A-3 completed 3-axis
operations on the Mitsu-40, and is currently in 5-axis machining on the U5.
- The project’s delivery
milestone is August 16. Forecast to ship to PPPL by the end of
July.
B-1
- The B-1 resumed operations
on the Mitsu-30 following machine repairs. It will be the next coil to
go the the Mitsu-40 for 3-axis operations.
- The project’s delivery
milestone is September 20.
B-2 and A-4
- The B-2 and A-4 are being
machined in tandem on the Lucas 40T and the Mitsu-30
- The project’s delivery
milestone is October 24 for A4.
- The project’s delivery
milestone is November 29 for B2, but it is now expected to ship ahead of A4 in
order to complete the first field period as early as possible. Both will
likely meet or beat the project schedule.
The expected delivery sequence for
the next few coils is A-3, B-1, B-2, A-4.
A-5, A-6, B-3, B-4, B-5,
B-6, and C-6
- The A-5, A-6, B-3, B-4,
B-5, B-6, and C-6 are in the queue for
machining.
3. VVSA procurement (Major Tool and
Machine)
- VVSA #2: Final machining
nearing completion. Final inspection next.
- VVSA #3: Rework shell
profile near end flanges, and full dimensional scan before welding the end
flanges.
4. TF Assemblies procurement (Everson Tesla,
Incorporated)
- Tesla has found a material
supplier for the wedge pieces. Properties tests at 77K are planned.
Alternate material sources are still being investigated in an effort to see if
a better delivery schedule can be obtained.
- Brazing preparations are in
progress: fixture design, brazing head design,
training.
- Winding fixture and mold
designs are being reviewed by PPPL.
- PPPL will loan some
equipment for tensioning and insulating of the
conductor
