Weekly Update of 06/21/06
1. Modular Coil fabrication
(PPPL)
MC Fabrication summary status:
4 in
production
2 completed through VPI and being
tested
C-1 Coil
- Planned cold testing
program was successfully carried out last week. Good data were obtained but
analysis will take some time.
- Some additional shots will
be taken this week to extend the data base to higher temperatures.
C-2 Coil
- Passed meggar test at 7.5
kV.
C-3 Coil
- VPI Prep completed and
moved to autoclave June 21. Milestone was June
9.
C-4 Coil
- Both sides have been wound.
Winding pack metrology and dimensional adjustments have been completed.
- VPI prep completion
milestone is July 20. On schedule.
C-5 Coil
- Cladding installation in
progress. Will move to winding station June 22.
- VPI prep completion
milestone is August 16. Currently 13 days behind
schedule.
A-1 Coil
- Moved to manufacturing
facility. Preparing to install in winding ring and prep station later
this week.
- VPI prep completion
milestone is October 2. Currently 11 days behind
schedule.
2. MCWF procurement (Energy Industries of
Ohio)
MCWF summary status:
All 18 castings
have been poured
2 in foundry operations
10 in machining operations
6
delivered.
Machining operations (Major Tool and
Machine):
A-2
- 5-axis operations
proceeding very well and nearly completed.
- The project’s delivery
milestone is July 13, but MTM is projecting shipment around the end of
June.
A-3 and A-4
- The A-3 is making good
progress in 3-axis operations on the Mitsu-40. Forecast to move to U5 around
July 5.
- The A-4 has completed some
3-axis operations on the Mitsu-30 and is in the queue for the Mitsu-40.
- The project’s delivery
milestones are August 16 and October 24.
B-1 and
B-2
- The B-1 and B-2 are
alternating in roughing operations on the Lucas 40T, and some on the Mitsu-30.
- The project’s delivery
milestones are September 20 and November 29.
A-5, A-6, B3, B4, and
C-6
- The A-5, A-6, B-3, B-4, and
C-6 are in the queue for machining.
Foundry operations (MetalTek
International):
B-5 and B-6
- The B-5 is passed final
X-ray at MQS and returned to MetalTek for final processing.
- The B-6 is undergoing weld
upgrades.
- Both B-5 and B-6 are
expected to ship to MTM in a single shipment at the end of
June.
3. VVSA procurement (Major Tool and
Machine)
- VVSA #2 is having its ports
aligned and prepped. Currently finishing the Port 4’s and the
domes.
- VVSA #3: Ports and end
flanges are being installed. Some re-work at the end flanges will be
performed, similar to VVSA#1.
4. TF Assemblies procurement (Everson Tesla,
Incorporated)
- Fermi Lab is preparing to
ship the induction braze unit to ETI.
- Mold and winding fixture
designs have been developed. Fabrication plans are being discussed with
outside machine shop.
- Sample bend tests have made
good progress. Tooling adjustments are being made based on results to
date.
- Tesla personnel are meeting
with stainless steel suppliers for the wedge pieces. Material delivery
schedule is an issue. There is potentially a 3 week slip in the schedule,
which ETI is working to resolve.
- Mike Kalish and other PPPL
staff have made weekly visits to ETI. Recent topics have been inspection
requirements and location of braze joints.
