NCSX Weekly Update of 03/15/06
1. Modular Coil fabrication
(PPPL)
C-1 Coil
- The C1 coil was VPI’d over
the weekend. The operation went very smoothly. The coil is being removed from
the autoclave Wednesday or Thursday.
- Current forecast is to
complete the C1 coil by 3/21/06, or 8 days ahead of schedule for the Level II
milestone scheduled for March.
C-2 Coil
- The
dimensional scan of the winding pack was completed. Clamp adjustments are in
progress.
- We expect to complete the
C2 coil by 4/18/06, versus our Level III schedule target of 4/17 in the
performance-measurement baseline. The C2 coil is well off the critical
path.
C-3 Coil
- The studs were
installed on the C3 coil and the C3 was moved to the winding
station.
2. MCWF procurement (Energy Industries of
Ohio)
MCWF summary status:
15 poured to
date
5 in foundry operations
7 in machining operations
3
delivered.
Machining operations (Major Tool and
Machine):
C-4
- The C-5 completed 5-axis
operations on the U-5 and was moved to the Lucas for final machining of the
poloidal break. We expect they will meet the project’s scheduled delivery date
of March 31.
C-5
- The C-5 completed 3-axis
operations on the Mitsu-40, reportedly ahead of schedule. 5-axis machining has
begun on the U5 The project’s scheduled delivery date is May
4.
A-1
- The A-1 moved to the
Mitsu-40 and began 3-axis machining operations.
A-2
- The poloidal break has been
cut and the shim welded in place.
A-3
- Ready to begin roughing
operations on the Lucas 40T as soon as the C-4 moves
off.
B-1
- Machining programs are
being developed.
C-6
- C-6 is at MTM, awaiting
machining.
Foundry operations (MetalTek International):
A-4
- The A-4 returned from
MQS after final X-ray and is expected to ship to MTM this
week.
A-5
- The A-5 is due back from
MQS this week.
A-6
- The A-6 is at MQS
undergoing RT.
B-2
- The B2 has completed
initial grinding. A preliminary dimensional scan is being conducted this
week.
B-3
- The B-3 casting poured on
March 10, for a total of 15.
3. VVSA procurement (Major Tool and
Machine)
- VVSA #1: Final port
alignment checks are in process and taking longer than expected. A full
dimensional inspection was carried out and the data sent to the NCSX team.
Though not in the original plan, this inspection was conducted because of
conformance questions arising from an earlier, in-process dimensional data
set. Because of these delays, the forecast ship date for VVSA #1 has
slipped to May 4
- VVSA #2, all the ports and
the support bosses have been installed, but welding of the end flanges is on
hold pending the resolution of the aforementioned dimensional issues on VVSA
#1.
- VVSA #3, the sector
is in the queue for the DSI machine where the port holes will be bored. This
operation is expected to start next week.
