Subject: Summary of NCSX SIT Meeting of
03/26/07
Summary of NCSX
System Integration Team (SIT) Meeting of Monday, March 26, 2007
1.
Readiness start MC assembly in May: Schedule Risks
- Additional holes in the MC
flanges. Try to issue drawings this week.
- Interfaces A-B and B-C
drawings are complete, pending final check of adequacy based on Myatt
analysis. Action: Mike C. follow up with Williamson. Assuming
OK, drawings for these interfaces can be issued.
- Interface A-A.
Drawings are being modified based on March 22 meeting (eliminate
midplane hole, add more). Release thereafter. Hopefully this
week.
- Material removal around
existing holes.
- The intent is only to
remove excess material that interferes with bolt hardware assembly. It
was explained that clearance requirements will be established using tooling,
such as simple gauges.
- A concern was raised that
material removal must not structurally compromise the winding form.
- Action: Mike C. follow
up with Viola to discuss how to minimize this
risk.
- Modular coil completion
(“punch list”) tasks.
- Ron urged that MC punch
list tasks (including new holes and grinding) be pushed with some urgency to
keep them off the critical path.
- However, we are still in
the process of identifying all the the required tasks and needed
materials. Steve Langish is coming up to speed.
- Action: Ron work
with Larry for now regarding scheduling of punch list
tasks.
- Bolt
hardware.
- We are ordering 1 field
period’s worth of bolt hardware (studs and washers).
- We are ordering bolts
with extra length to facilitate use of a tensioner should it be necessary,
but a concern was raised that the extra length could interfere with
tightening of the super nuts in some locations. It was decided to add some
shorter-length studs to the order for flexibility. Action: Larry.
- Are we ordering
production quantities of super nuts? (Not resolved at this
meeting).
- Half period assembly
drawings. (Mike C.)
- Will issue without the
shims for now, so other procurements can proceed.
- Field trials and tests
(Wayne)
- Bolt tension test: All
the parts are at PPPL, and we are proceeding with tests.
- Shear test: Part
drawings have been received from ORNL. PPPL will proceed with
fabrication. ORNL will test (correct?).
- Pinned shear plate
fabrication test. Needed actions:
- ORNL to define geometry
requirements for pin connection (hockey puck dimensions, weld area) based
on structural considerations.
- Define prioritized
issues for testing, e.g., will the pieces fit together after welding?
- Provide sketch of test
articles.
- Action: Mike C.
follow up with Freudenberg.
- Friction-based shear
plate. Backup option needs to be developed.
(Wayne)
- MC interface design reviews
-
Successful bolt
assembly PDR was held a few weeks ago
- Next: Complete above
field trials and tests to resolve remaining design issues (shim geometry,
shear plate for the bolt-free areas).
- Hold a comprehensive FDR
for the MC interface design.
- Procedures
- Development of assembly
procedures is paced by dimensional control elements. Loss of some fiducials,
possibility of winding form deflections are newly-recognized complications.
R. Ellis is leading the resolution of these issues.
- A-A fit-up trials to be
conducted in the near future are expected to clarify whether shims can have
parallel surfaces or must be tapered, and to clarify what the key issues
are.
- Tracking schedule for MC
Assembly Readiness
- When do we forecast we
will actually be ready to begin MC assembly?
- A detailed schedule is
needed that identifies all the tasks leading up to start of MC assembly,
with realistic durations and logic. Action:
Ron.
2.
ETC Update Issues
- Status summary was issued
by Ron. Reviews of WBS 2, 3, 4, and 5 were conducted last week. All have open
issues, which are being addressed via follow-up actions. All are
resulting in some amount of cost growth, so far.
- Review of WBS 14 (winding
ops only) will be scheduled this week.
- Coil Services (WBS 16):
Paul Goranson identified to be responsible for the estimate.
- Startup (WBS 85): Peer
review of e-beam mapping plan will be Tuesday 3/27 at 1:30.
- Initial input for remainder
of WBS 1 & 7 is due April 2.
3. Safety
Note
- The use of the Job Hazard
Analysis and pre-job briefs are fundamental to the NCSX safety
management approach. Tasks and external conditions affecting safety are
subject to change over the course of long-duration jobs such as coil winding
and field period assembly.
- Please re-emphasize and
reinforce the use of JHA’s and pre-job briefs in our
work.
